ROOTED MOON COLLECTIVE
Our story and philosophy
THE NEED
Rooted Moon was born out of a need to create a safe and supportive space for our family, in the midst of arriving in a new country, while expecting a baby, and coping with all the feels surrounding a growing pandemic. Needless to say change was inevitable and painfully necessary. We weren't alone in this experience but we felt alone. Our home became our sacred space and our perspective and priorities began to rapidly change.
THE PRIORITY
One of those priorities was creating nurturing space in an intentional and holistic way. Nesting for us means surrounding ourselves with the things we love most, getting rid of the things we don't, creating comfortable and usable space in every room, eliminating clutter with a few organizational tricks, filling our home with beautiful plants, scents and sounds, establishing our kombucha brew (obvi!) and creating an environment of comfort that eases our hearts and settles our souls on a daily basis.
THE PRACTICE
Tackling the art of packing, unpacking, sorting, donating, organizing, folding, hanging, and incorporating tradition and ritual along the way, TAKES PRACTICE. As we began the practice of planting roots, and helping other families do the same, we began to see the uniqueness in each individual family story. The collection of stones from every country a family ever lived, paintings from India, textiles from Africa, family portraits and pre-Columbian treasures. And it's not just the "things" but the traditions that make every story more sacred. For us, Kombucha is a huge symbol of home. Establishing our home brew helps us establish the health of our family and set roots in a new place. It has become a sacred ritual, like connecting with the sun or moon rise on your first day in a new country, buying your first plant, or going for a bike ride in your new neighborhood. Whatever they may be, these traditions become routine and that routine becomes a ritual that nurtures you, comforts your family and honors your story as you create your home.
THE ROOTS
To be rooted is to have a stable foundation, and from this stability we can build our lives and thrive, we can adapt without falling sideways when the wind blows. Living as diplomats in the Foreign Service, the wind blows often. We move every few years and we've learned a few things about the complexities of uprooting our entire lives and relocating to a new country. In the beginning all we have is each other and all we crave is stability. We have a whole new perspective on the concept of home, being a global citizen, and the responsibility we have to use our privilege for the good of others while contributing to the communities we become a part of. We are guests in our host countries and our roots intertwine with the ancestry of the world, establishing for us a new sense of connection and humanity.
THE MOON
So what has helped us take root and grow every time we move? We were living in El Salvador, our first post in this Foreign Service life. After two years in country it was time to wrap our minds around packing up and moving on to the next place we'd call home. We felt lost and sad, frustrated, overwhelmed and alone...and then I looked up at the night sky. The moon was in its waxing phase, on its way to brightness, almost full and whole again. We weren't alone. We had the moon. The same moon you can see from any point on the planet, no matter where you live or what you do. The same moon we look at tonight is the same moon you'll see when your sun sets. The same moon our ancestors looked at, prayed under and created tradition. The same moon that has watched every moment of development and destruction on planet earth for the past 4.5 billion years. We found our moon, and realized in that moment that she is our anchor to this life, to our past, present and future. The moon reminds us that we are all in motion, connected to each other and the natural cycle of life, death and rebirth. The moon has become a symbol of our connection to life's infinite cycle. Collaborating with this energy, moving with it instead of against it, has become the only way we know how to grow roots and thrive wherever we live and in whichever stage of life we happen to be cycling through.
The process of rebirth is not easy, nor is moving your family all over the world, reinventing and rediscovering yourself each time. We're here to help you find your moon and create your sanctuary, so you can root down into your new home and grow.
